  • 1 cup cheddar cheese

Optional substitutions:

Instructions

Step1: Prepare the Garlic Bread

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Slice the French bread loaf in half lengthwise and place it on the baking sheet.
  3. Mix softened butter with garlic salt and Italian seasoning, then spread evenly on the bread.

Step2: Cook the Sloppy Joe Mixture

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat for 6–8 minutes until browned. Break it apart with a spatula.
  2. Add diced onions, green peppers, and minced garlic. Cook for 4–5 minutes until softened.
  3. Drain excess grease to keep the bread crisp.

Step3: Create the Sauce

  1. To the beef and vegetable mixture, add tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings.
  2. Stir until well combined and let it simmer uncovered for 6–8 minutes to thicken.

Step4: Assemble and Bake

  1. Spoon the meat mixture onto each garlic bread half.
  2. Sprinkle mozzarella and cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
  3. Bake for 12–14 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden.
  4. Let it cool for 5 minutes before slicing into pieces.

Notes

  • Use freshly baked French bread for the best texture and taste.
  • Soften butter fully for an even spread.
  • Simmer the Sloppy Joe mixture until it thickens to avoid soggy bread.
  • Cool slightly before slicing for cleaner cuts and better presentation.
