Monte Cristo Breakfast Casserole: A Marvelous Morning Treat

  • Author: Maite
  • Total Time: 60 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

A delightful breakfast casserole inspired by the classic Monte Cristo sandwich, featuring ham, turkey, Swiss cheese, and French toast elements. This easy-to-make dish offers a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors, ideal for brunch or a hearty morning meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices bread (brioche or challah recommended)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup cooked ham, diced
  • 1 cup cooked turkey, diced
  • 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • Butter, for greasing

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Cut bread into 1-inch cubes and place evenly in the baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes.
  5. Sprinkle diced ham, turkey, and shredded Swiss cheese over the bread mixture.
  6. Cover the dish with aluminum foil. Bake for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until golden brown and set.
  8. Let the Monte Cristo breakfast casserole cool for a few minutes. Dust with powdered sugar before slicing and serving warm.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use brioche or challah bread.
  • Gruyère cheese can be substituted for Swiss cheese for a stronger flavor.
  • Lean turkey or chicken breast can be used instead of ham.
  • Serve with fresh fruit or a light salad.
  • For a healthier option, use whole grain bread, low-fat milk, and lean meats.
  • Consider adding sautéed spinach, mushrooms, and bell peppers for a vegetarian version.
